Experience That Powers Progress
Kate Young is the Director and Owner of Rocky Peak Geothermal, bringing over 20 years of expertise in clean energy, water resources, hydrocarbons, and education. With a career dedicated to advancing the geothermal sector, Kate has served on the Board of Directors for Geothermal Rising (formerly the Geothermal Resources Council) and contributed as a member of the Women in Geothermal (WING) global leadership team. These roles reflect her commitment to fostering collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity in the industry.
As the Geothermal Program Manager at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Kate led transformative efforts in geothermal energy, driving a 250%+ growth in the lab's geothermal portfolio by spearheading successful proposals and securing significant funding. Her work spanned cutting-edge research in geothermal drilling, exploration, resource reporting methodologies, and regulatory analysis, helping shape the industry's future.
Kate is the creator of influential tools like the Geothermal Reporting Protocol and Optimization Technique (GeoRePORT), the Geothermal Exploration and Area Case Histories on OpenEI, and the Regulatory and Permitting Information Desktop (RAPID) Toolkit, and was an instrumental contributor to the 2019 Department of Energy GeoVision Study. These tools and reports have streamlined processes, enhanced transparency, and supported informed decision-making for developers, agencies, and stakeholders. Kate has testified before Congress on the geothermal energy industry's potential, opportunities, and challenges, showcasing her expertise and advocacy for clean energy solutions.
As a water engineer at Martin and Wood in Colorado, Kate permitted, designed and observed construction of municipal water wells; developed groundwater models; and served as an expert witness in water court cases, including the landmark 02CW403 case upheld by the Colorado Supreme Court. Earlier in her career, she worked as a field engineer for Schlumberger, a geology instructor, and a database designer and developer, experiences that underscore her adaptability and depth of knowledge.
